Prep Schools' Tournament 2014

James Woodcock reports:

This year’s Championships took place at Harrow on Monday 10th March by kind permission of the Headmaster. A minute's silence was observed in memory of Roddy Forman Esq who had been a great supporter of Fives and the Prep Schools for many years.

32 pairs from familiar schools lined up to compete for this years’ Championships. After the pool matches Highgate had 4 pairs through to the quarter finals with a sole pair from Ludgrove, Cranleigh, Sunningdale and Summer Fields. Whilst the Highgate 1st and 2nd pairs overcame their two lower pairs Sunningdale’s 1st pair came through easily against Cranleigh.  Ludgrove 1 beat a weakened Summer Fields first pair who were in reality the 2nd pair as a consequence of two injuries. Sadly neither semi-final was competitive and the Highgate pairs progressed easily to the final. This proved to be an excellent match with lengthy rallies, good retrieving and little to choose between the pairs. In the end Highgate triumphed by 2 games to 1, the first of three matches with lower ranked pairs upsetting their internal school seeding.

In the competition for those eliminated at the quarter final stage Highgate 4 managed to outlast their 3rd pair 2-1 in another closely fought match.

The Jeremy Marston plate proved to be as competitive as ever. At the semi-final stage Ludgrove 2 lost to Summer Fields 2 with Cranleigh 1 losing to Summer Fields 2 by a single point. A young Summer Fields 3rd pair proved to be more consistent than Summer Fields 2 and were pleased to win the plate by the narrow margin of 12-10. Thanks are due as ever, to the Fives and Rackets staff at Harrow.

Highgate 2 ( D Gran & I Pukhtin) beat Highgate 1 (H Jenkins & L Perl) 11-15, 12-4, 14-13
