postheadericon Gangsters take Superleague Crown

Westway Summer Superleague 2011
There were few who dared to predict the outcome of last night's Superleague grand final, with Ant Theodossi's Gangsters hitting a rich vein of form in the quarters and semis, and Spencer Chapman's Studs, reigning champions, proving they have the big-game temprement in their epic win over WHOREFC.

As it was, it was the Gangsters that looked to settle fastest in front of a big Westway crowd. Theodossi led from the front, backed up by unbelievable hitting from Andrew Joyce in the first rotation, to defeat a shellshocked Laurie Brock and Nick Shaw 15-6, while Ryan Perrie and Jeremy O'Neill made it 2-0 Gangsters with a hard-fought, high quality 15-11 win over Gareth Hoskins and Jeremy Hindle.

The Studs knew they needed to win a point from the second rotation to stay in the game, but Perrie and the irrepressible Joyce had other ideas, smashing Brock and Hindle in a 15-5 blitz. From the Studs perspective it was down to Hoskins and Shaw to gain some kind of result against Theodossi and O'Neill, and it looked like they would do so, going ahead 12-3. The crowd assumed game over but the Gangsters had other ideas, winning a couple of quick points and loading the pressure onto the Studs pair who could not take their chances. The score was brought back to 12-12, then hit sudden death 14-14, where the Gangster pair struck, to secure a 4-0 lead and the Superleague title.

The final rotation was about playing for pride - Brock and Hoskins exploded out of the blocks against Theodossi and Perrie and managed to hang on to win 15-13, while Joyce and O'Neill ensured a final score of 5-1 with a 15-12 win over Shaw and Hindle.

Meanwhile, WHOREFC ensured silverware in defeating Fivercide by 5-1 in the 3rd/4th playoff match, Dave Mew and Alex Nice scraping a 15-14 win over Ed Hewins and Nick Bunyan the pick of the games.

In the individual awards, Ryan Perrie finishes just ahead of Jeremy Hindle to take the MVP, and also wins the Hotstreak award with an incredible 20 games in a row unbeaten, before losing his final match. Seb Cooley takes the Golden Glove with 22 shots in the hole, 4 ahead of second place Pete Cohen.

Congratulations to the Gangsters who fully deserve their win for their commitment on court and highly entertaining brand of fives - Joyce and O'Neill, entertainers to the last, celebrated by spraying the team and most of the crowd with champagne, and one can only imagine their celebrations continued long into the night.

postheadericon SEMIFINALS - Studs 4-2 WHOREFC / Gangsters 6-0 Fivercide

The Studs and WHOREFC quickly established themselves as arch rivals during last season's superleague, an ongoing war of words fuelled by captains Spencer Chapman and Will Skjott culminating in the narrowest of victories (a 3-3 draw won on points) for Chapman's Studs in last year's grand final. Since then there have been two more 3-3 draws between the two sides, and with a place in the final up for grabs this fixture was all about who would cope best under intense pressure.

On paper the two sides were evenly matched once again, and in the first rotation Seb Cooley and Nick Bunyan drew first blood for WHOREFC in a 15-6 win over Nick Shaw and Jeremy Hindle, while Laurie Brock and Spencer Chapman pulled the Studs back level, beating Ed Hewins and Simon Warren Thomas 15-7.

The second rotation saw some big performances - Bunyan especially was rock solid in defence against Shaw and Chapman, while partner Hewins won the big points time and again to pull WHOREFC clear 2-1 with a 15-11 victory. The Studs had to win the other game to pull level, and again they managed it, Brock and Hindle defeating Cooley and Warren-Thomas 15-11. Match score so far 2-2 (42-43 to WHOREFC).

The pressure going into the third rotation was tangible but every player coped well from the outset - the standard of play extremely high and the rallies seemingly endless on both courts. Shaw and Brock reached 14-8 before the pressure caught up with them, both players visbily choking when presented with gold-plated opportunities to close out the game. Finally they managed to cross the line, after holding back a late charge from Cooley and Hewins to win 15-13. A priceless and impressive win.

Meanwhile Hindle and Chapman found themselves level pegging the entire match against Bunyan and Warren Thomas - 5-5, 7-7, 10-10... in the closing stages, the Studs pair won a couple of crucial points in quick succession, setting up an opportunity to clinch a place in the grand final which they duly took, winning the game 15-12 and the overall match 4-2 (77-73).

An ecstatic Chapman commented afterwards "the boys were immense, they have been immense all season. This competition just gets harder and harder, to come through to the final is incredible"

Meanwhile, in the other semifinal, Gangsters took on Fivercide...

The Gangsters, led this year by Ant Theodossi, have been quality in the tournament thus far, but they were to meet one of the form teams, Phil Lyndon's Fivercide, with Dave Mew leading the line as number 1, backed up by Dave Smith, Carl Rennie and Alex Nice.

The first game set the tone for the fixture, with Theodossi and Andrew Joyce teaming up to scrape past a fighting Mew and Rennie 15-12, while on the other court Ryan Perrie and Alex Rattan of the Gangsters made it 2-0, beating Smith and Nice to 7.

Fivercide knew they needed to win points from the second rotation, but despite two very close matches (15-13, 15-11), they couldn't get any points on the board, and Gangsters secured their place in the final, while going on to win the final two matches to 7 and 10.

Although the match result was 6-0, the overall points tally was 90-60, reflecting the challenge set by the Fivercide team. Fivercide will now face WHOREFC in the 3rd/4th playoff on Monday 15th August, at the same time as the final between Studs and Gangsters.

In the individual awards, Jeremy Hindle is just three points clear (273-270) of Ryan Perrie, with the men facing each other on opposing teams at the grand final. Perrie has secured the hotstreak award with a massive 18 wins in a row so far, while Cooley and Pete Cohen remained tied on 18 shots in the hole for the Golden Glove. All very much to play for, so come along on Monday 15th at Westway to lend your support and take in the spectacle.

postheadericon Quarterfinals 3&4 - Studs 4-2 Martlet / WHOREFC 6-0 Team F

Two different quarterfinals produced two very different matches – in one we saw Will Skjott’s WHOREFC come into form at the right time to demolish their opponents Team F, despite strong spirit shown by Captain (Ralph) Morgan in encouraging his squad to battle to the end. ...Morgan’s outfit have been a quality addition to this year’s superleague, but the firepower of Seb Cooley, Ed Hewins, Nick Bunyan and Mike Skjott proved a step too far. The 6-0 result is probably fair, but does not reflect injuries sustained in the gym (while training for this match) by Team F engine room Alex Cybulski, forcing a last minute squad change. Guy Chapman, Adrian Love and Seth from Westway completed the line up – the pick of the games coming with Cooley and Bunyan fighting to a 15-11 win over Chapman and Morgan.

The other match featured Spencer Chapman’s Studs, superleague reigning champions and unbeaten in the group phase, taking on Martlet, marshaled by Chris Vincent with a core Mill Hill player base. It was clear from the outset that this was going to be a genuine threat for the Studs as Martlet took an early lead with outstanding energy, speed and composure around court. One of these games featured Jeremy Hindle and Chapman tied on 14-14, sudden death, with Joe Coakley and Chris Vincent for three serving cycles, before the Martlet pair took the crucial point and the 2-0 lead.

What followed was one of the classic superleague comebacks and proved utterly compelling for those watching. Laurie Brock and Spencer Chapman traded shot for shot with Coakley and Jitesh Patel until the game reached 14-14 sudden death. Four serving cycles followed – 16 hands – before Chapman and Brock finally took the set 15-14, a real captain’s performance in spite of the disappointment of losing the previous game to the same score. Meanwhile, Jeremy Hindle and Justin Byamshaw fought an equally intense battle with Sunil Taylor and Vincent, reaching 13-13, before closing the game with some trademark Hindle smashes.

With the match now at 2-2, Martlet had a 57-53 points advantage – so every mark counted in the final rotation. Hindle and Brock beat Taylor and Coakley 15-10, giving the Studs a 1 point swing. Meanwhile, Chapman and Byamshaw had gone 4-1 up against Patel and Austin when Chapman was rendered immobile and unable to stand with an intense cramp – the product of two 15-14 games. In a wonderful sporting gesture to be fully applauded, Martlet captain Vincent recognised the Studs slight advantage at the point of injury and the manner in which they had fought back, and took the score to stand at the point of injury.

This sets up two incredible semifinals – the Gangsters face superleague revelation Fivercide, while WHOREFC and Studs clash in a repeat of last year’s final. All welcome to come along and take in the spectacle – Semifinals on Wednesday 10th August at 7pm.

In the individual competitions, Jeremy Hindle goes top of the MVP once more, while Seb Cooley pulls level with Pete Cohen in the Golden Glove and must now be considered favourite for this award.

postheadericon Studs hold firm in face of Team F onslaught

Superleague 2011

It was meant to be the toughest test so far to the Studs domination of conference B, and in many ways it was - Alex Cybulski, Adrian Love, Jon Fagan and captain Ralph Morgan put in a huge effort to derail Spencer Chapman's winning machine, and although they came close it was another 6-0 win for the reigning champions.

The Studs recalled Nick Shaw and Ian Mitchell to the squad for the first time this season, and their experience proved especially valuable as together they came from behind to defeat Love and Fagan 15-12 in a nailbiting set. Fagan came close again, this time with Cybulski, in taking Shaw and Hindle to 9, while Morgan and Love had chances to win against Hoskins and Mitchell but couldn't get over the line. 6-0 in no way reflects the performance put up by Morgan's outfit, and after the game he was in confident spirits regarding playoff qualification, stating

'We played OK - on another day we could have taken them down. On current form we will definitely make the playoffs, but I think we can only improve, so anything is possible'.

Studs vice captain Gareth Hoskins made no secret of his aspirations surrounding the captaincy with an uncharacteristicly public attack on current skipper Spencer Chapman - despite the unblemished start to the campaign

'Our performance was indeed affected by the lack of Spencer, fortunately for the better'.

It will be interesting to see whether this divide in the Studs camp will affect their forthcoming match focus -  on current form, the rest of the Superleague will be sincerely hoping it does.

Hoskins goes top of the MVP, one Golden Glove point clear of Jeremy Hindle, but both have played more games than the rest of the current top five so expect changes over the coming weeks.

postheadericon Four4Fives in first ever win while Fivercide go top

Another Superleague double header saw big changes in both conferences. Phil Lyndon's Fivercide moved top of Conference A as they swept past Martlet in a resounding win that saw debutants Dave Mew and Chris Austin join team-mates Dave Smith and Lyndon in taking maximum points.

Meanwhile in Conference B it was a battle at the bottom of the table, Pete Cohen's Four4Fives taking on Emmalina Thompsell's Katona. Both sides have prided themselves on providing opportunity to players of all experience levels this season, and it was only fitting that although Four4Fives recorded an historic win to go second in the conference, the match was graced with several close games including James Hammond and Cohen clinching a 15-14 win over Tom Fletcher and Rez Malik in the A&B v A&B blue riband set.

Cohen goes top of the MVP but this week's one to watch is Phil Lyndon, who rocketed up the table into the top five with his second maximum points haul. The coming weeks will show whether he can hang on to - or even improve - this position; there are several players who might have something to say about that next week...
