Jesters tour to Provence, September 2011.
The opposition for this years Jesters Eton Fives tour to Provence was a Citizens (City of London School) side, captained by the redoubtable John Patrick Reynolds, 11 times national champion, and not-quite-so-elder statesman of the game.
JPR had rounded up a Citizens team ranging from Sam Packer, who is still at school, to David Cooper who at 70+ is more athletic than many a player half his age. The Jesters were led by Nick Bunyan and included Ronald Pattison, WIll Skjott and Jurgen Hutter among their number, as well as Nigel Cox, our host for the weekend
In true Jesters fashion, the actual teams were adjusted to ensure a suitable balance of talent on both sides, and a thoroughly enjoyable series of matches and coaching activities were undertaken throughout the weekend, often continuing with a late night session after dinner for the very enthusiastic.
After suitable adjustments and handicapping for age, ability and alcoholic capacity, I am pleased to say that the Jesters were the nominal winners by a narrow margin, although the vagaries of the world's only left-handed Fives court did mean that Lady Luck was a major player in the event!
On Sunday evening appropriate votes of thanks were given to the organisers, players and our hosts for the weekend, Nigel Cox and Jennifer Green. Following unanimous approbation it was proposed that the Jesters would aim to return next year to defend their position as champions of Eton Fives in Provence
